Australian Air Conditioning Industry

The Australian HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry) in Australia is a multi-billion dollar industry employing more than 95,000 people.

Installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment is a task that the industry specialise in. There are more than 6,400 businesses working in the air conditioning industry of Australia with a revenue of around $8 billion. The annual growth of the industry according to Ibis world is around 0.6%.

Within the Australian air conditioning industry the apartment sub-market seems to be the sector with the most increased growth.

The commercial HVAC installed base in Australia is estimated to consume at least 9 percent of the total electric production in Australia. This represents close to 4 percent of the total green house gas emissions in Australia. This sub market also accounts for more than 55 percent of the peak electrical demand in buildings located within the major commercial business districts of Australia.

Billions of litres of water are consumed annually in cooling towers within the industry. The government of Australia introduced a ten year initiative called the High Efficiency Systems Strategy (HESS) within the Australian HVAC industry to drive long term energy efficiency improvements of HVAC systems.

The strategy used encompasses the manufacture, design, operation, installation, and maintenance stages of the HVAC systems life cycle.

The initiative hopes to establish national standards for the design, manufacture, and installation of HVAC systems. In addition, the initiative recognises that efficiency gains can be gained by maintaining the existing HVAC systems within the industry.

Australian retail consumers spend more than $4 billion annually buying and installing small air conditioners. With over six million currently installed air conditioners, the Australian HVAC industry is expected to continue to grow in the coming years.

Another area that is leading the expansion of the HVAC industry is agriculture and exports. In order to feed the nation and export certain foodstuffs, the country requires more than 10 million cubic meters of cold room storage space. With such developments, it is clear that efficiency within the air conditioning industry is required in order to reduce the carbon footprint, reduce electricity consumption, and produce quality products.

The Australian air conditioning industry is a significant contributor to the gross national product through goods and services consumed in the country, exported to other nations, and through the number of persons directly or indirectly dependent on the employees in the industry.
